The Sandstone Bishop!
This is a picture I took inside the Porta Nigra in Trier, Germany. I was there in the Spring of 2008. It was built of sandstone between the years 186-200 AD. In Roman times, it was one of four city gates. What is fascinating is what you see, an image of a catholic bishop. The image of the bishop has taken a real beating in modern times. I can understand why some people have lost faith in their leadership. Nevertheless, the office of bishop was established by Christ himself and remains valid and holy to this day. This picture reminds us of its ancient roots and it is fascinating that it continues and will continue even while the world slowly passes away. Why? Jesus, who said in John 20:21: Peace be with you, as the Father has sent me, so I send you!
